Actor, director and writer Harold Ramis has died at age 69

(CNN) - Harold Ramis, who was the creative mind behind "Caddyshack," and "Groundhog Day" has died.

He was 69.

Ramis' talent agency says he died Monday in his Chicago area home from complications related to auto-immune inflammatory vasculitis.

He was surrounded by friends and family.

Ramis' breakthrough came in 1978 when he co-wrote "National Lampoon's Animal House."

He went on to direct "Analyze This" and "National Lampoon's Vacation."

Most recently, Ramis directed, wrote and acted in the 2009 film "Year One."

He is survived by his wife, three children, and two grandchildren.
