Debate continues over traffic flow around Hoover Elementary School

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - Local leaders have struck down a request from the Sioux City Community School District.

The two are working together on the roads, and other infrastructure, surrounding the new Hoover Elementary School.

After pressure from the neighborhood and the city, the district agreed to build a second exit at the school .

In return, Superintendent Doctor Paul Gausman asked leaders to help pay for a median to force a right turn only out of that second exit.

He said students' safety is the top priority.

Dr. Paul Gausman, Superintendent said "The folks that primarily urged that added egress did so because they wanted a great deal of efficiency and speed moving off of school property. My goal will never be to move people off property wth speed. It will be to do so safely first, and of course with efficiency if we can."

In a rare 2-2-1 vote, the request failed to pass.

Former school district attorney Dan Moore abstained.

During Monday night's school board meeting, Gausman told board members if they want to pull the second exit from the project they'll have to call a new vote.
