The Grand Canyon became a national park 95-years-ago today

(CNN) - Wednesday marks 95 years since the Grand Canyon has been a national park.

President Woodrow Wilson established the Grand Canyon National Park February 26, 1919.

Millions of years of excavation by the Colorado River created the canyon -- located in northwestern Arizona.

It is home to more than 1,500 plant species and more than 500 animal species.

About 4.5 million people visit the national park each year.

Wednesday also marks the 85th anniversary of the Grand Teton National Park.
