185th tries to cook up national award

A high-flying honor for Sioux City's 185th Air National Guard, not for what they do in the air, but for what they're cooking up in their kitchen.

They were picked to be finalists in a national food service competition.

Sunday, military inspectors from Washington, along with the national restaurant association visited the 185th's kitchen for this annual culinary competition.

Officials point out that what an airman puts in his or her stomachs is an important part of the mission, and they strive to give their military members a taste of home.

"We have individuals that when they're out in the field and they've been working hard, as 12 hour day, a 16 hour day, they just want to be able to come in and get some good quality food to eat,” said National Guard Services Career Field Manager, Chief Master Sergeant Ed Walden.

The 185th is competing against kitchens in Peoria, Illinois and Knoxville, Tennessee.

The winner will travel to Chicago to accept their award
