HARTINGTON, Neb. (KTIV/US 92) - A mediator has been assigned to handle a lawsuit between the city of Hartington, Nebraska and its former police chief.

Casey Nieman filed suit against the city in July of 2012.

He was fired after the Mayor Brad Pietz accused him of trying to secretly record a closed session of the Hartington City Council.

Nieman's suit claims his 14th Amendment rights were violated.

He seeks his reinstatement, plus back-pay and damages.

The District Court in Omaha is giving both parties until April 14th to report back with progress on the negotiations or else the suit will be dismissed.
