Icy fundraiser at Iowa Great Lakes

OKOBOJI, Iowa (KUOO/KTIV) - Many up in Iowa's Great Lakes may have driven past lake Okoboji and wondered why a car has not moved from the ice on Smith's Bay.

The ice beneath it may still be at least two feet thick, but a promise of warmer days to come means the ice on Smith's Bay will, believe it or not, eventually melt, sending a car to the bottom of the lake and making somebody a thousand dollars richer in the process.

The Lakes Area Morning Kiwanis and Rotary groups are sponsoring this year's car drop.

For $10.00 you can purchase a time of day you predict the car will finally go through the ice.

Seven-hundred and twenty time slots are available, and you can even purchase tickets the day the car starts to break through the ice.

A timer on the car's dash stops once it is completely submerged.

Proceeds go to support various projects the organizations conduct.

Tickets are available from any Lakes Area Sunrise Kiwanis or Rotary member.

The engine and all fluids have been removed from the car to avoid any concerns of pollution.

The Arnolds Park-Okoboji Underwater Search and Rescue crew will recover the vehicle, along with a local wrecker service, once it takes the icy plunge.
