Sioux City students get life advice from a world champion athlete

Not letting others define you. It's a thought that's led one world champion athlete to achieve beyond her dreams. On Monday, she was in Siouxland sharing her story and inspiring others.

With nearly 100 Sioux City middle school students in attendance, AnnMaria DeMars shared her childhood struggles and how she was able to overcome them. In 1984 she was crowned a world Judo champion, becoming the first American to achieve this. Years later, she started a multi-million dollar business.

She said the key to success is to be confident in your own skin.

"If I listened to anybody telling me, 'Well you're not the right shape, the right size, the right ethnicity, the right this,' I never would have done it. So I think, for most people, the biggest thing holding them back is the belief that their not the right fit for it," said AnnMaria DeMars, World Judo Champion.

In addition to her judo career, DeMars is also an author, blogger, business owner and a motivational speaker.
