Rarely used tax credit could put lots of change back in your pocket

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - If you still need to file your taxes, there's a credit out there that could put a lot of cash back into your pocket.
It's called the Earned Income Tax Credit. The guidelines vary from case to case.
A single person that makes less than 35 thousand per year can receive more than 400 dollars back.
A family with three children that files for the credit can receive up to six thousand dollars.
Whether or not you qualify for the credit is based on your yearly income, how many children you have, and whether or not you're married.
Officials at the Center for Siouxland, who have a volunteer staff to help file tax returns for free, say it can make a huge difference.
"We ask them, 'What are you able to do with this money that maybe you wouldn't have been able to do if you didn't get this credit?' Generally, it's used to buy a car. Some people use it to purchase a house. Another thing people use it for is paying off bills, paying off creditors. Trying to get ahead," Jonette Spurlock, Center for Siouxland said.
If you'd like help on your tax return, the Center for Siouxland in downtown Sioux City will help you file for free before the deadline on April 15th.
They're open for help during the week by appointment, and visit spots all over Siouxland to help on the weekends.
