A Siouxland animal shelter is getting support in a fundraising campaign from some of its elected officials

Representatives of the Animal Shelter of Northeast Nebraska updated the Madison County Board of Commissioners Tuesday, on the progress of their capital campaign to build a new shelter north of Norfolk.

Shelter officials said they're goal is to raise $1.5 million for the shelter. As of January, they were about a third of the way there.

The county commissioners agreed to draft a letter of support for the shelter's efforts. Shelter officials said they've been seeking support from elected officials to show potential donors the amount of support local leadership have given to the group.

The shelter was also recently announced as the recipient of a conditional grant from the Peter Kiewit Foundation in Omaha. If the shelter can raise $440,000 by the end of this year, they'll get another $100,000 from the foundation which would put them two-thirds of the way to their goal.
