Sioux City North won their first game at the boys state basketball tournament since 1983, beating Cedar Rapids Kennedy 75-65 in a Class 4A first round game on Wednesday.
The ninth-ranked Stars had four players in double figures, led by Xavier Scarlett 19 points. Daniel Tillo had 17, Deontre Dean had 16 and Robert Neustrom scored 10.
North (22-3) started the game on a 10-0 run and led 22-15 after one quarter. The Stars led 36-30 at the half. The game was tied 51-51 after three quarters but North outscored the Cougars (18-6) 24-14 in the fourth quarter.
The Stars shot 54% for the game, including making five of ten three point shots. North was also 12-17 from the free throw line. Kennedy shot 44% for the game.
"It was amazing," said North junior Daniel Tillo. "Last year we came here and we were kind of scared of the big moment. This year everyone played really great. I'm excited. We're pumped for Friday. We can't wait for it to get here. We're ready to play."
North will play unranked West Des Moines Valley in the Class 4A semifinals on Friday at 3:15. Valley (16-8) upset top-ranked Dubuque Senior, 42-41, in another first round contest.
