Police warn the Storm Lake community about a text messaging scam

The Storm Lake Police Department is issuing a warning to citizens in connection with a telephone scam that is saturating the area.

Police have learned that many in the Storm Lake area are receiving automated text messages from Wells Fargo.  The message tells recipients that their ATM check card has been blocked and asks them to click on a link to reactivate the card. The links "phish" for personal and financial information to use in a fraudulent manner.

Storm Lake police have determined that these messages are a scam and are not being conducted by any financial institution.

Police warn residents and businesses to watch out for these messages and to not provide any information to the senders.  Police say if you do receive one of the messages you should contact your local police department.

For more information, you can call the Storm Lake Police Department at 712-732-8010.
