Authorities charge 3 people with murder in the double homicide in Crawford County Iowa

NEAR DELOIT, Iowa (KTIV) - Authorities found two bodies at the scene of Monday's rural fire at 1872 Milford Road in Deloit, Iowa, who were later identified as 80-year-old Marvin Huesling and 81-year-old Alice Huisenga of Carroll County.

Officials say their information leads them to believe the two victims were long-time friends.

"The death of Mr. Huesling has been ruled as a homicide due to multiple gunshot wounds. The state medical examiner has ruled Ms. Huisenga's manner of death as the result of homicidal violence," Sheriff Jim Steinkuehler, Crawford County said.

After a day of processing the crime scene, officials released information about two white males seen near the fire at the time and enlisted the media's help to get more information about those two people from the community.

"We are fairly confident that the individuals related to this incident have been identified and apprehended," Dan Dawson, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said.

Authorities served a search warrant Wednesday at 820 Broadway in Denison, Iowa related to the fire with the help of tactical air support. Officials say the arrest wasn't made at that time, but provided information they can't disclose yet about the event itself.

"Generically, what our investigation is telling us right now, is the three people identified as charged in this investigation were likely out at that property to engage in stealing scrap metal from that property," Dawson said.

26-year-old Michael Schenk, 19-year-old Jayden Chapman, and 36-year-old Erika Haberberger-Dains of Denison were arrested and are held in Crawford County Jail on two counts of first degree murder and one count of first degree Arson.

NEAR DELOIT, Iowa (KTIV) - A fire that led authorities near Denison, Iowa to the discovery of two bodies at a rural property is being ruled a double homicide.

Authorities have arrested three people in connection with that crime.

The Crawford County Sheriff and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation held a news conference Thursday, informing the media that three people from Denison, Iowa were arrested.

26-year-old Michael Schenk, 19-year-old Jayden Chapman, and 36-year-old Erika Haberberger-Dains are each charged with two counts of first degree murder and one count of first degree arson.

The property and a pickup truck at 1872 Milford Road outside of Deloit, Iowa were found fully engulfed in flames Monday afternoon.

The bodies of 80-year-old Marvin Huesling and 81-year-old Alice Huisenga were found in the aftermath but the state medical examiner says Marvin Huesling died of multiple gunshot wounds and Alice Huisenga died of homicidal violence before the fire.

"The trailer was, how I would describe, for lack of better words, totally burnt. The victims were within the burned site, but whether they were within the structure is difficult to tell at this time," Dan Dawson, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said.

Officials say they believe the two victims were long-time friends, and the three arrested were general acquaintances.

Officials also say their investigation leads them to believe the three were trying to steal scrap metal from the property when the homicide occurred.
