Bishop Heelan head boys basketball coach Tom Betz received the prestigious Don Logan Service Award from the Iowa High School Athletics Association during finals of the Iowa Boys Basketball State Tournament on Friday.
The annual award was created by the IHSAA and the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) to honor Don Logan and others for exceptional service to advance Iowa High School Basketball. Logan, a long-time basketball coach at Benton Iowa Community Schools, helped start the IBCA which sponsors coaching clinics, All Star games and more. The award is presented during the State Tournament finals.
Betz has served as a 12-year member of the IBCA board and has served the board in a variety of areas. Betz recently completed his 13th year of coaching boys basketball at Heelan with a winning record of 255-70.
"There's a lot of people that go into getting a nice honor like this," said Betz. "I've been able to work with a lot of good coaches at Heelan. I've been blessed with a lot of great players, young men that have been part of our program. I'm just very honored to represent Northwest Iowa with this award."
As head coach Betz has taken teams to the state tournament seven times and won three consecutive state championships, tying a state record.
