Benefit held for family that lost children to car accident

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - On February 13, the lives of the Binder family changed forever, when their car met a train on the tracks in Alta, Iowa.

"We just have to celebrate the lives of our girls, and try not to concentrate on what a loss it is," Heather Binder said.

Heather and Dan Binder's daughters, four-year-old Chloe and two-year-old Camille, were critically hurt and flown to a Sioux Falls hospital, where they later died.

Heather suffered 13 broken ribs and punctured lungs.

"Oh, it was just horrible. It was like, why did this happen to a good family like that, you know?" Shawn Wiese, a family friend said.

"It tugs at everyone's heartstrings, when you think of losing your little children," Binder said.

Community members began banding together in support of the Binder family.

The Sioux City Conservatory of Music held a concert benefit on Sunday, something the Binders said was a perfect way to help them heal.

"It was always just a big celebration in our house. We would sing and play music, it's just always been something that's moved us," Binder said.

More than 200 people came to listen, and support the family, purchasing silent auction items and making donations.

"Hopefully it will help them get through the healing process, you know? I'll still be there for them. It's really neat that people support the community. Even the surrounding community," Wiese said.

And the Binders say the support has been overwhelming.

"I can't express how much it helps us to heal, just knowing how many people care, everyone reaching out to us in our time of need. I can't possibly imagine that all of this is for us," Binder said.

If you'd like to help the Binders, you can send donations to the Sioux City Conservatory of Music at 1309 Pierce Street in Sioux City, zip code 51105.
