Fire destroys part of downtown Marquette; no injuries reported

MARQUETTE (KWWL) - No one was injured in an early morning fire Monday in Marquette that destroyed three buildings and displaced five families.

The fire started around 1 a.m. at the back of the building that houses Marquette Hardware.

The building, which dates back to the 1880s, also had a beauty parlor and four apartments, two of which were rented out.

The raging flames caused the Marquette Hardware building to collapse, and the blaze quickly spread to surrounding homes.

The fire destroyed a duplex behind the building and a single-family home adjacent to it. An empty building on the other side of the building was also heavily damaged.

Mary Jo Pirc and her family has owned Marquette Hardware for 69 years. She also owns the building that housed it and lives across the street from it.

Pirc came home from her job at the casino shortly after midnight, and her tenants alerted her to the fire in her building shortly after that.

She and tenants said they may have lost a lot, but everybody is thankful there were no deaths or injuries.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
