They say you're only as old as you feel. Even though she'll turn 104 later this month, Emma Haring can crochet circles around people half her age. Literally hundreds of Siouxland kids have her to thank for keeping their hands warm in the winter.

Emma is one of those people who you don't think look or act their age. Widowed and on her own since husband Ernest died in 1944, Emma is an independent woman. She spent her life on her farm near Moville until she moved to Westwood Nursing and Rehab Center at the age of 98. Along the way, Emma picked up a hook and picked up some yarn and started to crochet.

"My cousin and I one day was just goofin' off and we went to Younker Davidson's," Emma explained. "She was quite into embroidering and that, and we run onto this mitten pattern and I said, 'Oh, I'd like to have one of them' and went home and started making mittens."

That was several thousand pairs of mittens ago. For about ten years now, Emma has kept busy crocheting and donating the mittens for the annual Goodwill Shoe and Mitten Party at Christmas time. That was 269 pairs of mittens last year.

Emma is modest about her contribution to countless Siouxland youngsters. "I just thought I'd be helpin' somebody. Keeps me busy and the time goes."

Granddaughter Toni Dwyer and her cousin's wife, Pat, supply much of the yarn. Emma also buys some of it with her Social Security check. And rather matter-of-factly, at that.

"Well, what else could I do (with it)?"

She's pretty fast, too. Emma can knock out a pair of mittens every day, if she's not distracted.

It's also a tradition for Emma to crochet afghans for every one of her grandkids, great- grandkids and great-great grandkids. That's 49 kids in all, plus one more on the way.

Emma will turn 104 years old on March 31st.
