UPDATE: A driver crosses the median and hits a semi near Sergeant Bluff, IA causing a multiple vehicle accident Wednesday


NEAR SERGEANT BLUFF, Iowa (KTIV) - Woodbury County Sheriff's Lieutenant Charles Hertz released more details, after an accident involving three semi trucks on Interstate 29.

It happened in the southbound lanes, south of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa Wednesday around 3:30.

Authorities said a northbound pickup, driven by Mitchell Smith, 40, of Sioux City, crossed the median hitting the back corner of a southbound semi driven by Wilbert Burmeister, 68, of Glenwood, Iowa. Smith's truck was then hit broadside by another semitrailer driven by Jason Weatherton, 35, of Beresford, South Dakota. Authorities said a third semi, tried to miss the accident, and went into the ditch.

Lt. Hertz said Sergeant Bluff Fire/Rescue used the Jaws of Life to rescue Smith and and a passenger in the pickup, April Wayman, 30, of Sioux City. They were taken to a Sioux City hospital.

The drivers of the semi trucks were not hurt.

Also assisting with the crash were Iowa State Patrol, Iowa DOT Motor Vehicle Enforcement, Iowa DOT Highway Maintenance, Sergeant Bluff Fire/Rescue, Salix Ambulance, Woodbury County Disaster and Emergency Services and the Woodbury County Sheriff's Office.
