Bishop Heelan students pack 125,000 meals to feed the hungry in Honduras

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - When dinner-time comes around, you may be thinking about what to eat, but not everyone has the luxury of knowing they'll have food on their table.

That's why students in the Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools packed lunches on Wednesday, and lots of them. They packed about 125,000 meals.

The food, which includes rice, dried vegetables, and seasoning, will be sent to people in need in Honduras.

Organizers of the "Then Feed Just One" program said it's a good way for students to learn about hunger issues facing other countries.

"We hope that they realize that there are a lot of people in the world that have nothing. And, we have so much in this country. Even the poor in this country have resources that they can get, but in Honduras they don't have those resources," "Then Feed Just One" Organizer Mary Mousel said.

And, many students said the lessons sunk in.

"These people could be dying right now and when you help give them food, it's better for them and it will help them," Mater Dei 5th Grader Laura Murray said.

"It makes me feel good because I'm helping other people who need it," Mater Dei 7th Grader Noah Roerig said.

Students contributed to the cost of these meals by paying $15 each.

Since, Bishop Heelan got involved with this program five years ago, volunteers have packed more than 642,000 meals.
