New studies show mixed results when questioning traffic camera impact on safety

A new study calls into question the effectiveness of traffic cameras. The website, iowawatch.org, said that in some locations cameras have proven successful in preventing accidents, but in other areas they've actually led to an increase in certain types of crashes. Sioux City police dispute the study and said locally, the numbers speak for themselves. They said accidents are down 49 percent at intersections with red light cameras.

Online article says city, local church members are encouraging Arabic families to move to Sioux City

An article from the U.S. based publication, Arab Daily News, focuses on efforts to encourage Arabic families to move to Sioux City. Nationwide, the article said many Arabic families face discrimination, job losses, harassment and racial profiling, but it said they would get a break in an area as welcoming as Siouxland. Karen Mackey of the Sioux City Human Rights Commission said the story speaks to the city's diversity and welcoming spirit.

E-cig sales ban for minors sent to final Neb. vote

A proposal to ban e-cigarette sales to minors in Nebraska is headed to a final vote in the legislature. Lawmakers gave the bill second round approval on Thursday. The battery-powered devices give users a puff of vapor with nicotine, sometimes with flavors. Minors who use e-cigarettes and stores that sell them to minors could face a misdemeanor charge for violating the law. The bill's sponsor said there hasn't been enough study to know if e-cigarettes are safe.

Sioux City baby picks namesake to win NCAA college basketball tournament

A nine-month-old Nebraska baby has a special reason for cheering on one particular team in the NCAA basketball tournament. Creighton Bonstead has the Creighton Blue Jays making it to the Final Four in his bracket. Creighton and his parents aren't Blue Jay fans and the baby isn't named after the university, but his parents said there's one obvious choice who they want to take home a national title. If the Creighton Blue Jays win it all and if baby Creighton wins his parent's office pool, the savings account for the young basketball fan will see a deposit.
