SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - Trying to avoid an accident, a semi driver caused another accident that closed parts of two busy Sioux City roads, Friday morning.

Sioux City Police said a semi jackknifed on westbound Highway 20 overpass above Interstate 29.That's after the semi's driver braked to miss another crash, involving a car and semi, happening right in front of him.

When the semi jack-knifed, it started leaking diesel fuel.

It took HAZMAT crews, and firefighters, about two hours to clean up the spill.

That's because the priority was to keep the diesel out of the storm sewers, which flow into the Missouri River.

Crew then had to choose to plug the hole in the tank, or pump out what's left.

"They got approximately 50 gallons, 45 or 50 gallons, out of the tank itself. We did stop it from going in to the waterway down below along Interstate 29. We got that dammed and dyked off," Assistant Fire Chief Brad Robinson said.

Crews say it's not a difficult process, but it takes a long time, and a lot of manpower.
