M'side rallies past Jamestown in extras

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - Nate Clark scored the winning run on an error by the first baseman in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift Morningside to a 5-4 victory over the University of Jamestown in the Mustangs’ home baseball opener on Sunday at Lewis & Clark Park.

Clark’s run broke a 4-4 deadlock that had stood since the Mustangs had tied the score in the bottom of the eighth inning. Morningside loaded the bases in the 12th when Clark and A.J. Staiert each singled and Cole Halgerson was hit by a pitch. Clark came home when Adam Smith reached safely on an error by the first baseman.

Morningside also had the bases loaded with no outs two innings earlier but failed to score when the Jimmies’ Grant Mattes pitched his way out of the 10th inning jam.

Morningside left 13 runners on base in the contest.

The Mustangs had rallied to tie the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the eighth inning when Clark led off with a double and came home on a one-out RBI single by Halgerson.

Clark, who launched a home run that glanced off the scoreboard to give the Mustangs’ a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, had a huge game for the Mustangs. Clark went three for four and reached base on five of his six at-bats with a home run, double, single, and two walks.

Cole Chapin also had a multiple hit performance with a pair of singles, while Staiert, Halgerson, David Foley, and David Badalucco all had singles.

Mustang pitchers Derek Appley, Lance Spongberg, John Russell, Nick Weeter, Kenny Namanny, John Sorenson, and Greg Scott limited Jamestown to eight hits and combined for seven walks and eight strikeouts. Scott had a strikeout and retired all three batters he faced in the top of the 12th to get the win.

The win was the Mustangs’ fourth in their last five games to put them within one victory of the .500 mark at 11-12.
