Winter lows bring wallet woes in Iowa

DES MOINES, Iowa - After experiencing a harsh winter, thousands of Iowans are behind on their utility bills.

The Iowa Utilities Board reports 243,000 Iowans had a past due amount as of February.

That's 4% more than a year ago.

But, the bigger number is the total amount of debt.

It hit 46,000,000 dollars.

That's a jump of 40% from a year ago.

April 1st is the end of the winter ban on utility shutoffs for people who haven't been paying their bills.
