Four-legged hero honored for his service

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, NE (KTIV) - A four-legged hero was honored in South Sioux City, Nebraska.

The family of John Douangdara received the Nebraska Veterans Medical Association's State Award at Monday night's city council meeting.

The award was for John's dog, Bart. Both, John and Bart were killed in early August 2011 when a U.S. helicopter was shot down in Afghanistan.

"There's not a lot said about Bart, just, you know, besides the fact they were a working team together, but for Bart to be individually be awarded, it means a lot, and I know John would be proud that they recognize Bart as well," said Chan Follen, John Douangdara's sister.

Bart has also been inducted into the Nebraska Veterinary Medical Association's Animal Hall of Fame, earlier this year.

John Douangdara's sister recently adopted a retired military dog named Dicky.  She spent 10 years in the navy.
