City approves new flood plain map around Perry Creek

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

Home and business owners on Sioux City's west side may soon be able to get rid of their flood insurance.

A $97-million flood control project on Perry Creek was supposed to take property owners out of the 100-year flood plain several years ago.

However, city officials had to go back to the drawing board after the federal government changed their requirements, leaving 167 properties, mostly businesses, still in jeopardy of being flooded, according to FEMA.

The city recently spent another $300,000 on additional upgrades and tonight they signed off on new flood plain maps.

FEMA still has to approve the maps before property owners can stop purchasing flood insurance.

"I'm not sure how many properties it was, but it's a significant reduction,” said Dundas.

Meanwhile, the city is working with an engineering firm to design storm water controls in Leeds.

In the next three months, the federal government is expected to approve a map that will require 19 Leeds businesses and 22 home owners to buy flood insurance.

The Public Works Director says it could take three years to build the infrastructure necessary to remove them from the flood plain.
