Cherokee juvenile detention center denies allegations of mistreatment

The juvenile detention center in Cherokee, Iowa is on probation after the state determined that it mistreated a teen who tried to commit suicide. DHS said the Northwest Iowa Youth Emergency Services Center kept a 17-year-old in leather restraints for 47 hours after he kicked at staff members. State code said restraints cannot be used for more than one hour without written authorization. The incident happened in 2012. The center submitted a corrective plan of action, which DHS has approved.

Woodbury County reviews drainage options for Orton Slough

Woodbury County officials are addressing drainage concerns on land between Salix and Sergeant Bluff. The Orton Slough Drainage District has a small tile line that can be very slow to drain after heavy rainfalls. After 10 inches of rain fell over three weeks time in 2011, it took a month for the water to drain. One proposed fix would cost up to $780,000. Supervisors are gathering information before making any decisions.

Shrine Bowl Dinner

Nebraska U.S. Senate candidate, Bart McLeay, is campaigning in support of businesses that are suing the federal government over the free birth control requirement of the health care law. The Republican spoke at a rally Tuesday in Madison. McLeay is one of five Republicans running for the seat of retiring Senator Mike Johanns.

Dennis Daugaard: Shrine Bowl Dinner

South Dakota Governor, Dennis Daugaard, wants four more years. He officially kicked off a re-election bid on Tuesday with rallies in Sioux Falls, Rapid City and Pierre. The Republican said he's made the tough choices during his first term, taking a $127 million structural deficit and bringing the state budget into a surplus. Daugaard is being challenged by two Democrats.
