Siouxland prepares for tornado season during severe weather awareness week

Posted:
DAKOTA COUNTY, Neb. (KTIV)- -

It's severe weather awareness week in Iowa and Nebraska. Tornado warning sirens could be heard all across Siouxland on Wednesday. It was part of a state wide tornado drill for Iowa and Nebraska.

With severe weather season quickly approaching, the goal of drill was to make sure every siren is working properly and to remind people what to listen for if there is a tornado.

"The one thing that is important to remind people is they are outdoor warning sirens, so people inside may not hear them," said Deanna Beckman, deputy director of Dakota County's Emergency Management Agency. "So that is another reason why we really want to educate people this week and have them understand that they are outdoors."

The outdoor warning sirens are tested each month during the spring and summer.
