IOWA CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - The Hawkeyes had the second of 15 spring practices on Thursday. Iowa finished 8-5 last season, including a 5-3 mark in the Big Ten and a loss to LSU in the Outback Bowl.

Every college football team has to replace seniors and the Hawks lost some good ones. They lose ten starters including six on defense. Linebackers Christian Kirksey, Anthony Hitchens and James Morris are all gone. The each had over 100 tackles last season.

But it's time for head coach Kirk Ferentz to find other leaders and he thinks they're ready to shine.

"How are we going to replace those guys that have played such a big role, be it three guys that were pretty prominent, a guy like C.J. Fiedorowicz that was pretty prominent, or a guy like Brett Van Sloten, who was a little bit more under the radar being an offensive lineman, but was such a strong force within our locker room and those types of things," said Ferentz. "It's going to be fun to see who emerges and I think we have a lot of guys that are trying to grab the wheel a little bit."

Iowa will hold a practice at West Des Moines Valley high school on Saturday, April 12th, with the spring game on April 26th.

The Hawkeyes first three games are all at home against Northern Iowa, Ball State and Iowa State.
