Round dance and dinner honors Native American culture

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - It was a packed house at the first ever healthy living round dance and dinner.

The Native American event featured a traditional round dance, which is a friendship dance.

There was other dancing and singing, along with a hand drum contest. Also, a meal with fry bread cooked by a tribal elder.

Tribes wanted a way to give back to the Siouxland community.

"There was a lot of things happening in the community that affected, even though people were living in this urban area, it affected the people on the reservations as well. And so we needed a positive event, we needed an event to bring people together," said Garan Coons, Master of Ceremonies

The event was open to the public and took place on the campus of Briar Cliff University.
