M'side softball pushes winning streak to seven games

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - Morningside’s softball team ran its winning streak to seven games after it swept the University of Jamestown by scores of 2-1 and 13-1 in five innings in Sunday’s doubleheader at the SYA Complex.

The Mustangs improved their record to 12-6, while Jamestown, which came into the twinbill riding a five-game winning streak of its own, slipped to 9-11.

The Mustangs used the long ball to back the standout pitching of Jordan Johnson to win the opener. Morningside scored both of its runs on solo home runs when Johnson went deep in the fourth inning and freshman Elin Landgren blasted the first home run of her collegiate career with a solo shot in the fifth.

That was all the offense Johnson needed as the senior ace allowed one unearned run on five hits. She walked four and struck out 12 while raising her season’s record to 6-3. Johnson struck out five straight Jamestown batters during one stretch of the contest.

Aside from the two home runs, Jamestown pitcher Emily Snow allowed only two other hits – a double by Kristina Neumann and a single by Michelle Brockamp - while going the distance. She finished with a four-hitter with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Morningside turned the nightcap into an early run away when it chased Jimmie starter Hanna Dunnigan during a seven-run first inning. Dunnigan retired only two batters before she exited after allowing seven runs on five hits. However, all the runs were unearned after two of the Mustangs’ first three batters reached base on errors.

Alexandra Hirt supplied the big hit in the Mustangs’ seven-run opening inning with a bases loaded clearing double, while Kati Steffen and Taylor Daas both had RBI singles.

The Mustangs exploded for six more runs in a third inning where winning pitcher Kayla Salonen provided the big blow with a three-run home run.

Salonen went two-for-two with a home run and three RBIs and Daas added a pair of singles to pace a Morningside 11-hit parade in the nightcap. Hirt and Rachel Koch each had doubles.

Salonen (6-3) allowed one run on six hits in the abbreviated five-inning contest. She walked one and struck out eight.

The Mustangs will play a GPAC doubleheader against Northwestern on Wednesday in Orange City, Iowa.
