Accused Sac City, IA murderer extradited from Florida

A Florida man was arrested last week in the murder of a Sac City, Iowa man, which happened several years ago, has been extradited to Iowa. John Green, 54, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Mark Koster. His skeletal remains were found in the basement of his home in 2012. Police said Green admitted to being responsible for Koster's death, which they believe happened in 2009 when the two lived together in Sac City.

Spencer, IA police chief reflects on 38-year career

After 38 years on the police force in Spencer, Iowa, Chief Mark Lawson is turning in his badge. Monday is the last day on the job for Lawson, who is retiring. Lawson will stay on for a few months as a volunteer to help get Spencer's new law enforcement center ready for the department to move in. Lieutenant Mark Warburton will fill in as interim police chief until a new one is hired. Officials hope that will happen by mid-June.

South Sioux City fire department holds training session

Firefighters get hands-on training in South Sioux City, Nebraska. An old abandoned house was set ablaze this weekend so that about 15 to 20 volunteer firefighters could practice different scenarios. Those behind the exercise said the best way to train is by fighting an actual fire, which provides the real pressure of the smoke, flames and heat.

Downtown Sioux City park proposal hits a road block

An effort is underway to spruce up part of 6th Street in downtown Sioux City. First Presbyterian Church is planning to create a "contemplative garden," called Shepherd's Garden Park. It'll be a place for people who work in the area to have lunch or enjoy a quiet moment outdoors. The $850,000 project got started four years ago, but is now in a holding pattern as project leaders wait to see if they qualify for a Vision Iowa grant.
