Construction season begins, bringing big changes to Gordon Drive

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - March 31st marks the beginning of some major construction in downtown Sioux City.

That construction will have an effect on something more than just the drivers on the road.

About 300 parking places are fenced off at the Tyson Events Center for construction work for the foreseeable future.

While not all of that parking is gone permanently, officials say a good portion of that parking will be gone when the construction is over.

Because parking is already fairly scarce around the event center, Erika Newton, Sioux City Events Facilities Director, says it'll take some patience for everyone, but hopefully be worth it in the end.

"It is going to be a much cleaner entrance into the city, and it is going to make a big difference and have a better impact on first impressions coming into the city. Hopefully, at the end of the day, the entrance into the Tyson Events Center is going to be much better," Newton said.

Dakin Schultz with the Iowa Department of Transportation says the construction in Sioux City will be messy for a while, but they're optimistic that the changes they make will be worth it in the end.

"Even without the I-29 project, Gordon Drive was showing some signs of distress. This is an opportunity for us to get in there and reconstruct it and make a nice facility for the years to come," Dakin Schultz, Iowa Department of Transportation said.

As a part of the Gordon Drive and I-29 construction, Gordon drive is projected to be a one way street starting mid-April, and won't return to normal until around Thanksgiving of this year.

For now, just portions of the lanes between Virginia Avenue and Pearl Street are closed off.
