121,000 waiting for organ transplant

Every ten minutes, a new patient is added to the transplant waiting list.  It's a need that keeps growing, faster than the number of people signing up to donate.

April is National Organ Donation month, and to mark the occasion, Sioux City's Mercy Medical Center gathered organ donation recipients, donors, doctors, and nurses.

The celebration was capped off with an organ donation flag raising ceremony.

One-hundred-twenty-one-thousand people are currently waiting for a transplant; 28,000 are added to the waiting list every year.

Five-hundred-sixty of those people are in Iowa.

A Mercy Medical Center spokesperson says 400 people died at their hospital last year.  However, only six donated their organs.

"When you think of the waiting list with 121,000 on it., every person needs to make a decision, talk to their family about organ donation and hopefully we can increase the number of donors that we have,” said Mary Ann O'Dell, a donation services specialist with the Iowa Donor Network.
