Decorah Eagle Watch 2014: First egg hatches

Posted: Updated:

The Decorah eagles first eaglet of the 2014 season hatched Wednesday morning. The new eaglet will be known as D-18.

Bob Anderson is the director of the Raptor Research Project. The organization offers a live view of the eagles nest online that attracts thousands of views. This year the eggs weren't expected to hatch due to the brutal temperatures this winter.

"This pair of birds laid their eggs when it was more than 20 below zero, in 20 mile per hour winds on some of the days, and then a few days later they got dumped on with 10 inches of snow. So when I've seen that happen in the past sometimes the embryos die." Anderson said.

Anderson said now that one egg has hatched, he is hopeful the other two eggs will hatch in the coming weeks as well.
