Elgin, NE raises money for new sign to the city

One Northeast Nebraska town is raising money to spruce up a symbol of their community.

It's a project the city of Elgin has been working on for half a decade. This quaint Antelope County community is in need of a new community sign, and has been fund raising for a brand new digital one since last October.

"Our sign has billboard letters that we have to put up and we can only display one message at a time. With the new electronic sign, we will be able to display numerous messages at the same time to scroll through,” said Dwayne Esau, the President of Elgin Community Club.

The current sign has been a public image of the town since 2000 and is starting to show it's age.

For example, the sign's light no longer works, the locks on the display case are broken and the town is on its third set of block letters.

A new digital sign is estimated to cost roughly 20 thousand dollars, with 12,500 of it already raised through contributions from the City of Elgin, The Antelope County Visitors Committee and more.

The community is shooting to have the new sign installed this June, before the town's Q125 celebration, honoring Elgin's milestone birthday.

“There's an account set up at the Bank of Elgin for this fund. It’s a great thing for the community and will be a really big benefit for our city,” said Esau.
