Ho-Chunk, Inc. CEO applauds passage of bill to allow historic horse racing

A second attempt to allow betting on previously-recorded horse races has passed the Nebraska Unicameral.

Ho-Chunk incorporated is one advocate of moving forward the bill and developing South Sioux City's Atokad Downs to provide the gambling.

Last week, lawmakers fell short of approving the measure. Monday, lawmakers voted to approve the proposed constitutional amendment 30 to 17.

If approved by voters, the amendment would allow the installation of video betting terminals at race tracks like Atokad.

Ho-Chunk CEO Lance Morgan says, if passed, the new venue in the area would provide a big boost the community. "It's obviously going to be a big step forward the entire community of Sioux City and the Sioux City area. In particular, South Sioux City. It will be another entertainment venue, another restaurant, another place to go and do something fun and exciting." said Lance Morgan, Ho-Chunk Inc.

Morgan says he's seen a lot of support for the measure locally. Some opponents say the measure is simply expanding gambling.
