Iowa DOT Official: 2014 will be a tough year for getting around

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

The orange cones are out in full force in downtown Sioux City.

A staging area is now set up in the Tyson Events Center Parking Lot, part of which will become Gordon Drive.

The road is being moved to make room for Interstate 29, which will be widened there in 2016.

Until mid-May, two lanes of Gordon Drive will be open for southbound traffic only.

Then the southbound lanes will close until August, and two northbound lanes will open.

"We've got about 20,000 vehicles a day, is our 2011 count, and because of safety reasons, because of congestion issues, we can't run that much traffic one lane in each direction," said Schultz.

Work will last through November.

We're at the half-way point of the ten-year I-29 project, and Schultz warns that 2014 could be the most difficult yet for drivers.
