Suspect in Deloit, IA murders pleads not guilty to charges

One of the people charged in the murder of an elderly man and woman near Deloit, Iowa last month is pleading not guilty. Jayden Chapman, 19, faces two counts of first degree murder and one count of arson in the deaths of Marvin Huesling, 80, and Alice Huisenga, 81 on March 10. Michael Schenk, 26, and Erika Dains, 36, face the same charges. Schenk has pleaded not guilty. Dains has yet to enter a plea.

Wayne, Neb. marks six month anniversary since tornado tore through town

It's been six months after the tornado hit Wayne, Nebraska and the rebuilding effort continues. Many construction crews have been at work replacing buildings and businesses that were destroyed. Mayor Ken Chamberlain said these guys know what they want to get accomplished and they mean business. Meanwhile, local leaders are drawing up plans for some sort of celebration of survival to mark the one-year anniversary of the tornado on October 4.

West 7th facade improvements approved by Sioux City leaders

An effort to give an aging part of Sioux City a facelift gets a boost. The city council has approved $300,000 for a Facade Improvement Program on West 7th. A similar program was used successfully on Pearl Street. Improvements include exterior restoration of buildings, such as new storefronts, windows, signage and paint. Twenty-seven businesses applied for funding and 11 were chosen.

Ho-Chunk, Inc. CEO applauds passage of bill to allow historic horse racing

A proposed ballot measure that could allow betting on previously recorded horse races has been passed by the Nebraska Legislature. The measure allows voters in November to decide if Nebraska should license and regulate wagering on the races. Ho-Chunk Incorporated is one advocate of moving forward the bill and developing South Sioux City's Atokad Downs to provide the gambling.
