Assisted living residents at Holy Spirit Retirement Home were voluntarily evacuated from apartments for about an hour.
SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - There was a heavy haze hovering over the west side of Sioux City Tuesday, after a grass fire broke out.
Crews were called to this wooded area between West 25th and West 28th streets around three o'clock. That's near Holy Spirit Retirement Home and Briar Cliff University.
They were able to get the flames under control quickly, however, they remained on the scene for several hours, dousing hot spots.
There's no word on the fire's cause.
One resident said she's used to seeing grass fires this time of year, but this was the worst she's ever experienced.
“Lots and lots of smoke. High, high flames. I would say the one was in a tall tree at one time and the flames looked at sometimes like they were a good five feet tall," said Rita Wood, whose home is three doors down from the forest's edge.
Holy Spirit Retirement Home voluntarily evacuated their assisted living apartments for about an hour this afternoon because of the heavy smoke.
