Woodbury Co. courthouse set for security upgrades

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

Feeling safe in public shouldn't be a concern, especially in a courthouse.

Woodbury County supervisors approved $250,000 to improve the security in the courthouse just a few months ago.

And, Tuesday they decided how they'll spend those funds.

The board gave the sheriff's department the go-ahead to start the hiring process for eight to ten new positions for security personnel.

They also agreed to only use one entrance to the building and move the wheelchair lift to this area.

"I think we're implementing the most important part of the plan and that is to lock one set of doors, have just one entrance in to the courthouse, along with a scanner and the security personnel," Supervisor Jackie Smith said.

"I think it's a big relief. We needed to do this a long time ago," Supervisor Mark Monson said.

One safety measure that isn't in the initial plans is adding security cameras.

Supervisors said that's because they don't have sufficient funds for that right now, but it will be looked at again in the future.
