Volunteers clean Elkhorn River banks in downtown Norfolk

NORFOLK, NE. (KTIV/US92) - Earth Day was celebrated early in one Siouxland community.  Business leaders and residents of Norfolk, Nebraska took advantage of Saturday morning's nice weather to clean up the part of the Elkhorn Riverfront area in downtown Norfolk.  The fourth annual clean-up event was sponsored by the Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce's Green Council.

"It's just a great way to get individuals out there and realize that their trash does make a difference in the community. We like to help clean things up and get a group of people and enjoy the outdoors," said Monica Rotherham, Special Programs Manager for the Norfolk Area Chamber.

The Nebraska Public Power District also volunteer its time and a wood chipper to clear dead trees along the river bank.

The chamber provided a lunch for the volunteers this afternoon following the clean up.
