Hillshire turkey plant fire in Storm Lake, IA determined accidental

STORM LAKE, Iowa (KTIV) - Investigators said the blaze that heavily damaged the Hillshire Brands Turkey Processing plant in Storm Lake last month was started accidentally.

The Iowa State Fire Marshal's Office says it has determined that the fire started in a wall in the dark meat room of the plant following a welding operation. The March 22 fire caused more than $30-million in damage.

There were no injuries, but about 600 people have been off the job since that day.

Hillshire is continuing to pay those employees until they are able to go back to work.

The company says it will take at least three months to rebuild the damaged part of the plant.

In a statement released this afternoon, the company says they appreciate the efforts by the city and fire officials.  "At this point, the company is continuing to investigate and review all details surrounding the fire, and its financial magnitude," said Mike Cummins, The Hillshire Brands Company.
