A man aboard a Southwest Flight tries to open a plane door mid-flight; Emergency landing in Omaha
Joshua Carl Lee Suggs caused the disturbance on the plane.
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (CNN) - Some brave Southwest airlines passengers are being praised after stopping a man from opening one of the doors mid-flight.
Witnesses say he was planning to jump from the plane.
It started with loud frantic voices on Southwest Flight 722 from Chicago on its way to Sacramento.
"All of a sudden we heard a woman scream way in the back and we saw the stewardess rush to the back and it was all sorts of commotion," Andre Lescari, a passenger said.
People onboard the plane tell CNN affiliate, KCRA-3 the commotion stemmed from this man, trying to open the rear exit door.
"Fear immediately sets in, I think, to everyone. We had people nauseated, practically fainting, crying," Natalie Lee, a passenger said.
Witnesses say he wanted to jump out of the plane.
"I was really thinking that something was going to happen. You just kinda got that bad feeling that something wasn't going right, especially when a bunch of big guys got up and jumped into the aisle immediately and ran towards the back of the plane," Lori Depalma, a passenger said.
??One of those men, Doctor Scott Porter, first thought it was a medical emergency, but soon realized there was a threat.??
"We basically tackled the, I don't want to say gentleman, but the guy who was back there, and pinned him down. He was gonna do bad things to the plane,so it was pretty scary," Dr. Scott Porter, a passenger said.
Witnesses say the man was not coherent.
"I got the sense that he was probably on some sort of drugs or that he was psychotic."
The pilot was forced to make an emergency landing in Nebraska.
"Just tied his hands together and put him in the chair and I think one of the marshals sat with him for the rest of the trip till we got to Omaha."
Air marshals escorted him off the plane with people clapping as they drove him away.
"This is one time where I might sound a little sexist, but I'm glad there were some burly men on the plane because they really did what was great."
Great, and some passengers say, heroic.
CNN affiliate KCRA reports that the man who caused the disturbance on the plane is Joshua Carl Lee Suggs.
