Budget appeal hearing is set in Sioux County, Iowa

ORANGE CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - The state appeal board will be visiting Sioux County for a budget hearing, this comes after a petition was filed challenging the county's approved 2014-2015 budget.

The New Broom Society of Siouxland filed the petition saying that Iowa's Sioux County is proposing to raise taxes by $700,000 and spend almost four million. The petition also says bullying by the sheriff prevented fair comment and questions at budget hearings.

A private audit was done on the county's finances.

The Sioux County auditor says the report did not indicate any issues.

"We've got notification on what we need to prepare. So my office is putting together some information that we think will prove our case to the State Appeal Board," Lois Huitink, the Sioux County Auditor said.

Sioux County leaders will also need to justify any new or large increases in expenditures.

A three member panel from the state appeals board will hear from both the public and the county on Thursday.

The hearing is open to the public and is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. in the Sioux County courtroom.
