Sioux City close to allowing exceptions to pit bull ban

Sioux City leaders took a step forward to allow animal rescue groups to bring pit bulls temporarily into the city.

If approved, rescue groups would be allowed to apply for an exception to the 2008 pit bull ban.

“Right now, with the way that the ban is in place, Noah's Hope can't bring in any their pit bulls or pit bull mixes into pet smart for adoption events or into any Sioux City veterinarian,” said Michele Lewon, of Noah's Hope Animal Rescue.

City leaders have passed two readings of the ordinance without much public discussion.  The third and final reading will take place next Monday.

Rescue groups would still be prohibited from fostering the animals in Sioux City, and wouldn't be allowed to adopt them out to Sioux City residents.
