Hillshire turkey plant fire in Storm Lake, IA determined accidental

It appears the fire that heavily damaged the Hillshire Brands turkey processing plant in Storm Lake last moth started accidentally. After investigating, the Iowa State Fire Marshal's Office said the fire started in a wall of the plant following a welding operation. The March 22nd fire caused more than $30 million damage. There were no injuries, but about 600 people have been off the job since then. Hillshire said the company is also investigating the fire and its financial magnitude.

Water service restored in Dakota City, NE following two line breaks

For about 10 hours Monday, nearly 2000 Dakota City, Nebraska folks didn't have running water. A transmission line that broke on Saturday in town broke again, but in a different spot. City officials said these breaks are the reason behind the huge water reconstruction project they are working on right now. Water was restored to Dakota City and Dakota County Rural Water just before 3:00 p.m. Monday afternoon. However, the city is still under a boil advisory.

Budget appeal hearing is set in Sioux County, Iowa

The State Appeal Board of Iowa will conduct a budget hearing in Sioux County this week. That's after a petition was filed challenging the county's approved 2014-2015 budget. The group The New Broom Society of Siouxland filed the petition in objection of a $700,000 increase in the spending plan. The group claims bullying by the sheriff prevented fair comment and questions at budget hearings. The hearing will be held Thursday at 1:00 in the Sioux County courtroom.

The Sioux City School Board passes its 2015 budget

The Sioux City School Board has approved a $160 million budget for the next fiscal year. That's an increase of $11 million over the current year's spending. It includes a drop of 16 cents in the tax levy, but because of the state formula, property taxes will be going up. The increase amounts to about $19 for every $105,000 property valuation for the school portion of your taxes.
