Norfolk 101 Citizen's Academy: behind the scenes of city government

NORFOLK, Neb. (KTIV/US92) - A pilot program designed to show what's behind the scenes of city government concluded its first program Tuesday night in Norfolk.

The Norfolk 101 Citizen's Academy is an eight week course formed to offer residents an opportunity to learn things about the city they might not have known before.  Throughout the course, residents got a chance to learn about the city's parks and street department.  Organizers said the program was designed for new and longtime residents.

City officials said the turnout for the first Citizen's Academy was positive.

"We had 19 people sign up right away and we have been going through all the different departments of the city," says Diane Becker, with the city of Norfolk.  "One night we went to the fire and police department. Another we went to the waste water treatment plant, another to the water department. We have been in the housing and economic development division."

City officials said they're planning another Citizen's Academy this year. They said anyone interested in signing up can contact the city office.
