Hayton named starter for game 3 of Clark Cup Playoffs

Posted:
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) - After helping the Sioux City Musketeers jump out to a 2-0 series lead over Omaha in the first round of the Clark Cup Playoffs, Head Coach Jay Varady says goaltender Kyle Hayton will be in net Friday night for game three against the Lancers.

Sticking true to the routine during the regular season, Varady let Hayton and Collin Olson battle for the starting job, before naming the Minnesota native the starter today.

Including his two postseason victories, Hayton is 4-2 against the Lancers this season.

Even with strong goaltender play along with great offense and defense, the Muskies aren't resting on their laurels.

As quickly as they took series momentum with two road victories, the Muskies know Omaha is a good enough team to steal it right back.

"To me, if you look at their record and their team they have an outstanding track record as a group," Head Coach Jay Varady said.  "So, if you back a dog in the corner what are you going to get?  You're going to get a push back, you're going to get a fight.  For us, we have to raise our level of desperation higher than theirs throughout the course of the game, especially to start."

Friday will be the first home playoff game for the Muskies since 2008.

After missing the playoffs last year, at the beginning of this season, Varady says one of the goals set was to bring playoff hockey back to Sioux City.

"It's going to be exciting for the city," Varady added.  "That's one of the things we talked about as our core values is when our fans leave our building they're proud of our team and our work ethic.  I think we can say that for the most part throughout the regular season and now we're going to bring a playoff game home and we're excited about that."

Game three of the series is Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Tyson.
