Changes for Walleye Weekend tournament on the Iowa Great Lakes

IOWA GREAT LAKES (KTIV/KUOO) - Spring has finally arrived and the ice on the lakes is beginning to recede.

That means the new fishing season will be here soon.

And, for one group of local Lake a popular fishing tournament will be going through some big changes.

A new law that's intended to curb the spread of aquatic invasive species is forcing a rule change for the annual Walleye Weekend tournament on the Iowa Great Lakes.

The new law, which took effect July 1st of last year, requires water to be drained from water-related equipment, including boats, trailers, bait containers, live wells, ballast tanks and bilge areas when leaving a water access.

As a result, Jen Johnson, Program Director of the Iowa Great Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce, says Walleye Weekend will no longer be a "live" tournament fish do not have to be alive to be considered in the tournament.

We're now a harvest tournament.

So those fish can be dead.

We really want to protect the lakes.

So again, the change is to protect the Iowa Great Lakes and other surrounding bodies of water from aquatic invasive species.

Walleye Weekend will be held May 3rd through the 4th in the Iowa Great Lakes.
