Evansdale Fire takes 'Plunge for Landon'

Posted: Updated:

Friday evening, Evansdale Fire & Rescue took the plunge for a good cause.

It's a movement called "Plunge for Landon." Participants record themselves running into freezing cold water to raise money for Landon Shaw, an infant in Missouri with a rare form of cancer. Participants donate after their plunge.

"So it really has had an impact on what I'm sure will be a long and ongoing process," Evansdale Fire Asst. Chief Justin Smock said, "A very expensive process as well."

Evansdale firefighters were nominated by the La Porte City department. There were some interesting strategies at the event.

"I'm going to run as fast as I can," said Capt. Mitchell Jones. "Hopefully, I don't wipe out before I get to the water, because that would be embarrassing."

The group in Evansdale isn't alone, either. Similar videos are popping up all over Facebook.

But Smock says to stay safe, look before you leap.

"The biggest thing is to be familiar with the body of water you're going into," he said. "Especially if it's a moving body of water that the current and things are safe and you know, basically, what's underneath you."

Participants in Evansdale said even though they'll probably never meet Landon, they still want to be part of the movement.

"It's a positive twist on things," Smock said. "We like seeing the good in people and the good in what they can do for each other."

Contributions may be sent to Landon Shaw, care of The Flower Mill, 606 Main St., Tarkio, MO 64491, or through PayPal via teamlandon102113@outlook.com.
