Woodbury Sheriff and supervisors at odds over courthouse security

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) Woodbury County's courthouse has gone years without formal security, but they've budgeted $250,000 to make the building more secure.

However, it seems the way they'll be staffing the courthouse is still up in the air.

Woodbury County's Sheriff Dave Drew received a letter last week from Chairman George Boykin. The letter says there was "no formal approval to create a new position." But, the Sheriff says he was clear they would need an additional full-time employee to oversee the part-time help, and he says he's been keeping the budget and safety of the citizens in mind.

He's disappointed with how it's been handled.

"You write a letter, and you tell me you have concerns, but you don't include me in that process. I can tell you that's frustrating and that's a lack of transparency that the board of supervisors continue to have," said Dave Drew, Woodbury County Sheriff.

The sheriff says the courthouse security committee had several options, and didn't have to pick the sheriff's department to run courthouse security, but since they did, there are certain contracts they have to abide by when it comes to properly overseeing personnel.

Chairman George Boykin says the board still needs to consider its options and hear more from the sheriff.

"Is the position, a full time position necessary, at that particular level of funding? And, is there a better way of doing that? Could the Sheriff combine some of his work responsibilities with other sergeants that he would have within his department," Woodbury County Supervisor Chairman George Boykin said.

Boykin says the full time sergeant position could run the county about $70,000, and part of his concern is that will bring the county over budget.

There's no word when a final decision will be made.
